A fine and tight copy in original blue boards, original printed paper label, uncut (re-backed in tan paper preserving label), housed in a marbled slipcase. Lithographed frontispiece, four lithographed plates (two folding). Some light foxing with a few pale stains. FIRST EDITION.
In 1792, Capt. Fanning sailed to the South Seas in search of seal skins. The next 25 years he made voyages to the Pacific and around the world. He visited Australia, South Georgia, Fiji, Tonga, and Marquesas and discovered several island, one of which is situated 1200 miles south of Honolulu, still bears his name. In 1829, Fanning was instrumental in organizing an exploring expedition to the South Seas under the command of Benjamin Pendleton and Nataniel Brown Palmer.
This copy comes with the bookplate of Steve Fossett. Adventurer, Sailor, and first man to sail around the globe in a balloon. A very nice copy.
